Pathway Courses
The Kansas Board of Regents have implemented systemwide placement measures and corequisite developmental support for Math and English General Education courses.
Math Pathways
Gateway math courses are designed to offer multiple pathways in mathematics general education requirements. Unlike the traditional one-size-fits-all approach, gateway math courses recognize that students have varied goals, interests, and strengths. This framework aims to provide a range of learning experiences aligned with students’ future aspirations.
These three gateway courses are:
- MATH 101 – Contemporary Math
- MATH 250 – Elements of Statistics
- MATH 110 – College Algebra*
*It should be noted that some programs require an advanced math course beyond the general education curriculum requirements. In these situations, students who qualify to enter the advanced math course should do so, thereby fulfilling general education and program requirements.
Placement measures for MATH 101 – Contemporary Math include:
- Math ACT: 19 or higher OR
- Math SAT: 510 or higher OR
- ALEKS PPL: 30 or higher OR
- Accuplacer QAS: 255 or higher OR
- HS GPA and Course Grade: 3.00 cumulative GPA (unweighted) and C- or higher in Second Semester Algebra 2 or Integrated Math 3 OR
- Institutional Measure
Corequisite support course for MATH 101 – Contemporary Math: MATH 100 – Contemporary Math with Review. Students who do not meet any of the placement measures listed above will need to register for the corequisite support course.
Placement measures for MATH 250 – Elements of Statistics include:
- Math ACT: 19 or higher OR
- Math SAT: 510 or higher OR
- ALEKS PPL: 30 or higher OR
- Accuplacer QAS: 255 or higher OR
- HS GPA and Course Grade: 3.00 cumulative GPA (unweighted) and C- or higher in Second Semester Algebra 2 or Integrated Math 3 OR
- Institutional Measure
Corequisite support course for MATH 250 – Elements of Statistics: MATH 245 – Elements of Statistics with Review. Students who do not meet any of the placement measures listed above will need to register for the corequisite support course.
Placement measures for MATH 110 – College Algebra include:
- Math ACT: 22 or higher OR
- Math SAT: 540 or higher OR
- ALEKS PPL: 46 or higher OR
- Accuplacer QAS: 263 or higher OR
- HS GPA and Course Grade: 3.25 cumulative GPA (unweighted) and B- or higher in Second semester Algebra 2 or Integrated Math 3 OR
- Institutional Measure
Corequisite support course for MATH 110 – College Algebra: MATH 105 – College Algebra with Review. Students who do not meet any of the placement measures listed above will need to register for the corequisite support course.
English Pathway
Placement measures for ENG 101 – English Composition I include:
- 18+ on ACT Reading AND ACT English; OR
- 500+ on SAT ERW (Evidence-based Reading and Writing); OR
- 255+ Accuplacer Reading AND Writing; OR
- 3.0+ high school cumulative unweighted GPA after five or more semesters; OR
- 16+ ACT Reading AND ACT English AND B or higher (not B-) in most recent high school English course; OR
- 2.7+ high school cumulative unweighted GPA after 5 or more semesters AND B or higher (not B-) in most recent high school English course
Corequisite support course for ENG 101 – English Composition: ENG 012 – Writing Studio. Students who do not meet any of the placement measures listed above will need to register for the corequisite support course.
