MUS 391 - Jazz

This course will introduce students to various components of jazz, such as style periods, musicians, and compositions. No previous experience with music or jazz is required. This course also examines the musical legacy of the Atlantic slave trade, specifically how African music merged with a Western European musical tradition in the United States. The clash of these two very different types of music resulted in creating a unique American art form, Jazz. Music is and always has been a reflection of the life and times of people. When we try to understand the history of African Americans, Jazz music continues to explain where words begin to fail. An important component of the course is listening examples and videos. These are intended to enhance the students' listening ability, make them better consumers of all kinds of music including jazz, and to have a deeper understanding and appreciation of the musical legacy of African American history.
