History
The study of history at the university level is one of the foundations of a liberal arts and sciences education. Historical study has humanizing and broadening effects on the individual. It is also a practical choice for the student interested in a broad range of career opportunities.
The Department of History and Philosophy emphasizes a world view of human development in its curriculum for majors. The department also produces students who have the practical skills of critical thinking and analysis, curiosity, tolerance and objectivity, investigative technique, writing ability, and computer skills in international databases. These methods of critical inquiry have served history majors at FHSU well in careers as varied as historical research, law, medicine, business, theology, government service, military service, historic preservation, historical society leadership, journalism, secondary education, and other professions. The department encourages students to participate in arranged apprenticeships in preparation for history-related careers other than secondary education.
There are several scholarships in history available on a competitive basis for sophomores, juniors, and seniors majoring in history at FHSU, including transfer students. Graduate students are eligible for assistantships and scholarships.
All history students with the necessary scholastic achievement are eligible for membership in Phi Alpha Theta (International History Honor Society). The department also sponsors the History Club which is open to all FHSU students.

Graduating seniors in the department must enroll in this course during the final semester of their program. Course requires students to a) complete a no-credit, no-fault content assessment exam, b) complete an exit survey, and c) participate in an exit interview with the Department Chair or chair-appointed faculty member.
Orientation to History is an introductory course for history majors which introduces students to the fundamental concepts, activities, and approaches to the historical profession. This course is intended to provide a rationale for the study of history, as well as practices that will help students to integrate knowledge, meaning, and interpretations.
